Indiana: Yesterday, Chief Justice Randall Shepard announced his resignation from the Indiana Supreme Court. He will step down from the court in March 2012, after serving as the state's head of the judiciary for twenty-five years.[1]

Before his appointment to the Supreme Court in 1985, Shepard served as a judge on the Vanderburgh Superior Court for five years. He has been retained to the high court three times during his service. During his tenure as Chief Justice, Sheaprd earned a LL.M. degree in judicial process from the University of Virginia.[2]

Following his resignation announcement, Governor Mitch Daniels said, "Most Hoosiers recognize the historic place Randy Shepard will always hold in Indiana judicial history. What fewer people may know is there is no more nationally respected Supreme Court judge in any state in America, and this has been so for a very long time."[1]

The Chief Justice's retirement will give the governor his second appointment to the five-member high court. The court is one of three in the nation with no females currently serving on it.[3]
