Kansas: Chief judge Gary Rulon will retire from the Kansas Court of Appeals in January 2011, at the end of his current term. He has served the court since 1988.[1]

The Court of Appeals has seen changes during Rulon's tenure. Most notably, the number of judges serving has increased from seven to thirteen and now retired judges are able to come back and serve as part of the "senior judge program". Both of these measures have reduced that caseload that Rulon now believes are in "pretty good shape".[2]

To fill the vacancy left by Rulon's retiring, the governor will appoint a judge, choosing from a list created by a nominating commission. The replacement will serve until the next general election, when voters must approve the new judge.[3]
