China Cochran was born in Detroit, Michigan. She earned a master's degree from Marygrove College and pursued her Ph.D. at Eastern Michigan University.

In the Legislature, I will work to grow our state's incredible talent pool and advocate for post-secondary and vocational training. When we make smart investments in our people - our future workforce and entrepreneurs - our economy will be that much stronger.

The state must prioritize equity for all and fight for affordable child care, smart investments in public education, and a higher minimum wage, so that all workers can make ends meet and provide for their families.

Michigan’s budget has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 virus shutdown. How would you address the deficit? Do you prefer spending cuts or tax hikes?

We must ensure that pandemic recovery prioritizes the economic security of every Michigander, including relief for local small businesses. District 3 is home to The Avenue of Fashion, one of the most vibrant business corridors in Detroit - a model that can be expanded to other areas. We must invest in small businesses and entrepreneurs focused on creating good-paying jobs in our neighborhoods and strengthening our local economies.

What’s the best approach for meeting Michigan’s roads and other infrastructure needs?

Our crumbling infrastructure and roads strain local businesses, municipalities, and residents across the state. We must focus on making smart investments in safer roads and bridges, better transit options, and safe, accessible drinking water for all Michiganders. Improving these key facets of our everyday lives will not only attract more opportunities here, but it will also make our communities safer, healthier, and more prosperous across the board.

What’s your one big idea for improving public schools?

I believe that all Michigan students, regardless of zip code, should have access to quality public education. I will fight for smaller class sizes and investments in early childhood, music, and STEM education. As a doctoral student in Urban Education, I will always advocate for research-based policy focused on increased educational funding for our schools.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am passionate about public education because strong families and schools are the bedrock of our community. Our kids deserve a strong voice who will prioritize smart investments in their futures. I am a proud graduate of Detroit Public Schools, mentor and tutor young people in my free time, and am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Urban Education. I will be a strong voice for our kids' future as District 3's next State Representative.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I am inspired by the strong women in my neighborhood and family, like my mother and sister, who are the backbone of our communities. Women's daily lives often center around caring for others, while leading everyday lives with empathy and compassion. They are a big reason why I am running for State Representative -- we need more women leaders in elected office.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Our community deserves a bold champion who will be our voice in Lansing. I bring the experience, focus, and energy to break through the noise and fight for the values important to each of us.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

While experience in government can be helpful, I also believe that representatives with life experience outside of politics can bring a fresh perspective and great value to the process.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Recovery following the pandemic will be a challenge, and we must ensure that the health, safety, and economic security of all Michiganders are top priority. The public health crisis's impact will be long felt, especially as local and state revenues take a hit.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

If successful in this campaign, I will be laser focused on representing the people of the 3rd House District.
