Chip Saltsman was the campaign chairman for Mike Pence's (R) 2024 presidential campaign.[1] He was a senior advisor to Mike Huckabee's 2016 presidential campaign.[2] Saltsman previously worked as the campaign manager for Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign and as a consultant for the 2010 and 2012 U.S. House campaigns for Tennessee Rep. Chuck Fleischmann.[3] Saltsman has also been the senior political advisor to VOLPAC, a political action committee chaired by former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.[3]
Career
Saltsman's political career began in 1994 as the administrative assistant to then-Governor of Tennessee Don Sundquist.[3] In 1998, Saltsman left his position with Sundquist to become the chair of the Tennessee Republican Party and was faced with the initial challenge of what he called "leading the charge against his friend and former boss" over Sundquist's plan for a state income tax.[4]
From 2004 to 2006, Saltsman worked as a political advisor to VOLPAC, the political action committee chaired by then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R). According to Saltsman's official website, "In 2004, eighteen of the twenty-two races that VOLPAC supported were successful. And, in 2006, VOLPAC helped ensure the election of Senator Bob Corker over Harold Ford, Jr. in Tennessee.[3]
In the presidential primary race for 2008, Saltsman managed Mike Huckabee's (R) campaign to success in Iowa. In his role as campaign manager, Saltsman "oversaw all aspects of the campaign, including political, fundraising, communications and operations.[3][5] After managing Huckabee's campaign, Saltsman ran for the chair of the Republican National Committee but dropped out of the race after taking criticism for distributing a satirical CD critical of President Obama.[6]
In 2010 and 2012, Saltsman ran the campaigns of Chuck Fleischmann for U.S. House of Representatives. Between these campaigns, Saltsman served as Fleischmann's chief of staff.[7] Saltsman left Fleischmann's staff in 2013 to form a consulting business, S&S Strategies, and the Fleischmann campaign cut ties with Saltsman after the 2014 primary elections.[7]
