My name is Jorge Christopher Canales. You can call me Chris. I am a native El Pasoan, a public servant, and a local homeowner. I’m a pragmatist, a realist, an optimist, and a futurist. I’m a consensus builder, a progressive, an advocate for those who need a hand, a proponent of science, and a believer in the fundamental good of people. Favorable outcomes come from hard work, and I am ready to work hard towards a better future for our vibrant Sun City as your City Council Representative for District 8. I care deeply about public service, good governance, smart city planning, and ensuring that we have an efficient and high-performing local government that works for all of its residents. Through my background in education, sustainability, and local government, I am uniquely qualified to bring El Paso into the future. I believe that effective public policy has the power to transform lives, and I want to ensure that we build an El Paso that works for all El Pasoans.
  • I want to build an El Paso that works for everyone, regardless of race, class, gender, sexuality, or socio-economic status.
  • Through my years working as a public education advocate, a sustainability consultant, and in local government, I have gained the knowledge and skills to navigate the complex systems of government and accomplish what needs to get done.
  • El Paso is poised to become a local leader in job and wage growth, sustainability and clean energy, and overall quality of life. My goal is to get us there.
The priority issues that I detail in my platform are the following:

Smart City Planning, Sustainability and Clean Energy, Street Conditions and Resurfacing, Beautiful and Functional Parks, Affordable and Low-Income Housing, Equity Across the District, Family-Friendly Activities, Accessibility and Inclusive Design, Streamlined Processes, Improved Public Transit, Voter Approval of City Debt, and Helping Those Who Need a Hand.
As a high school student, I was hired at the El Paso Times do multimedia reporting and work on the web desk. I had that job for several months until I went away to college.
Significant experience working through the complex bureaucracy of City government, knowing exactly who to go to and what needs to happen to get things done, is vital to success in this position on the City Council.
