Campaign themes

2016

Chahinian's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

  • Education: I believe that by improving education, we can solve a multitude of social problems. Education has a long-range of impact in virtually every aspect of daily life including employment, crime, home values, teen pregnancies, homelessness and poverty. Education improves critical thinking skills among children and builds self-confidence. This encourages them to be entrepreneurs and small business owners, as they become productive members of our society. Good education is the backbone of a healthy society. Quality education cannot and should not be an option; it should be a priority. With your support, we can make quality education for our children a reality. When our children succeed we all succeed.
  • Transportation: We need to invest in our state. In California we have 33 million registered vehicles and we have about 950,000 mile of road. Over 50% of the state roads need maintenance and nearly 70% of California roads are congested. Studies have shown that for every $1 billion that is spent on transportation infrastructure, 18,000 jobs are created. We are 40 years behind Europe and ten years behind China when it comes to high-speed train transportation. Car pooling and using public transportation will also help our environment. We need to provide proper roadways and transportation options for our citizens.
  • Special Interest groups: Over a hundred years ago, Abraham Lincoln warned us about money and power hijacking our freedom and democracy. Today, that prophecy has become our reality. Special interest groups and big corporations have hijacked our democracy. When millions of people lost their homes and businesses because of the greed of Wall Street, our government rushed to rescue them instead of the people. We have been neglected by Sacramento for a long time. It is time to stand up for your rights.
  • Senior Citizens: Each phase of life brings a new set of priorities and responsibilities. As we make changes, our lifestyle and circumstances alter our views of the world.

The most pressing issues for senior citizens include transitional housing. Transitional housing entering retirement usually requires adjusting to a lower, fixed income. Senior housing, prescription drug and health care costs and availability to quality care are certainly among these issues. Prescription drug prices are still an issue for many seniors. For some, it becomes necessary to choose basic food and shelter needs over essential medications. Financial concerns include the uncertainty social security and Medicare programs. I would like to see all Californians have a descent living throughout the entirety of their lives. Our senior citizens should be cared for instead of neglected.[1]
