Recall reports

An effort to recall Mayor Chris Erickson is underway in Auburn, Nebraska.

Erickson was elected as mayor of Auburn in 2022.

Recall supporters

The recall effort is organized by Amanda Powell. Many Signals Communications reported that recall petitions list as grounds for recalling Erickson that he "abuses his office, is ineffective as a leader, and appointed someone with a conflict of interest who profits from the city."[1]

Recall opponents

Erickson said the following in response to the recall effort.[2]

The City Council unanimously approved the nominated councilperson without any concerns. All their payment claims have been unanimously approved. It is hard to have all council members without a conflict of interest in a city of Auburn's size. I have followed the Open Meetings Act, Robert's Rules and relevant ordinances when receiving public comments at meetings.[3]

Path to the ballot

No specific grounds are required for recall in Nebraska.[4] The number of signatures required to put the recall on the ballot depends on the office type. A majority of offices require signatures equal to 35% of the total vote cast for that office in the last general election.[5] Petition signatures must be filed within 30 days of the filing clerk issuing the petitions.[6]

The recall petition was filed with the Nemaha County Clerk on July 23, 2025. Organizers were required to submit at least 301 valid signatures by September 9, 2025, in order to put the recall on the ballot.[2]
