Chris Fidelibus (Republican Party) ran for election to the Hawaii House of Representatives to represent District 41. Fidelibus lost in the general election on November 6, 2018.

Fidelibus was a 2016 Republican candidate for District 19 of the Hawaii State Senate.

Campaign themes

2016

Fidelibus' campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • Education continues to be a major issue, especially for the Ewa area. Overcrowded and underfunded schools like Campbell High School do a disservice to families, children and teachers.
  • Funding education should always remain a top priority in our State budget. We can attract skilled teachers both here and abroad by offering a wage that reflects the high cost of living in Hawaii. Educating the next generation directly affects the overall health of our local economy, both in the short-term and long-term.

Rail/Traffic

  • Rail/Traffic are big issues for many Leeward communities because so many residents must commute to and from work/school. We need more transparency and accountability to get the public back on board to find a solution that won’t indebt taxpayers even more.
  • I support completing the rail all the way to Ala Moana as was originally intended, otherwise ridership will suffer and increased operational costs will land on the shoulders of taxpayers. The City and State must work together to make this happen by greatly improving transparency and accountability of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) and exploring more opportunities for Federal funding.

Homelessness

  • Homelessness continues to grow, putting a huge burden on everyone in our state. Affordable housing and homelessness are two issues that are intricately connected. The most important step in solving both issues is properly funding programs and services that provide shelter and other assistance, focusing on homeless families with children first.
  • Homelessness needs to be a top priority when it comes to funding, but we need to spend that money wisely. I support programs like Housing First and private/public partnerships like we’ve seen in the Sand Island/Keehi Lagoon area with the City and Institute for Human Services’ (IHS) Hale Mauliola temporary housing site and the upcoming Kahauiki Village project. Forging partnerships with businesses, nonprofits and other community organizations needs to continue and expand.
  • Identify/Focus on areas most impacted by homelessness first (Waikiki, Downtown/Chinatown, Leeward Coast).
  • Reach Out to stakeholders in each community (businesses, nonprofits, churches and other organizations) to discuss public/private partnerships.
  • Fund programs sufficiently through Legislative allocations.

Balance in Government

  • Balance in Government is desperately needed in Hawaii. We need more diverse voices at the table. An overwhelming majority of any one party is not good for the people because there’s a lack of checks and balances.[1]
