Chris Fitzsimon is the publisher and chief exeutive officer of States Newsroom, a nonprofit news organization for state-level reporting.[1] He also founded and directed N.C. Policy Watch, a Raleigh, N.C.-based progressive news project of the North Carolina Justice Center.[2] Fitzsimon founded N.C. Policy Watch, now called NC Newsline and an affiliate of the States Newsroom, in 2004.[3][4]

Biography

Between 1982 and 1991, Chris Fitzsimon was a reporter for the television station WITN in Washington, N.C., and for Raleigh, N.C.-based television outlets WECT, WUNC, and WRAL.[3] From 1991 to 1994, he served as a special assistant for policy and communications to North Carolina House Speaker Dan Blue (D).[2] From 1994 to 2003, he was executive director of the Common Sense Foundation, a progressive policy think tank.[5] From 2003 to 2004, he was spokesman and director of the Campaign to Protect America's Lands (CPAL), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, where he wrote a weekly newsletter about the Bush Administration's land policies.[3][2]

Fitzsimon became the founder and executive director of N.C. Policy Watch in 2004, where he stayed until he became the publisher and chief executive officer of States Newsroom in 2017.[2][3]

Fitzsimon became the publisher and chief executive officer of States Newsroom in 2017.[3] States Newsroom's website says Fitzsimon "leads the organization's strategic direction and mission, steers fundraising efforts, defines editorial strategy, and works closely with the Leadership team and Board of Directors to ensure the long-term financial sustainability and operational effectiveness of States Newsroom."[1]

N.C. Policy Watch

Fitzsimon founded N.C. Policy Watch in May 2004.[3][2] N.C. Policy Watch was a Raleigh, N.C.-based progressive news project of the North Carolina Justice Center.[2] According to Raleigh, N.C.-based television station WRAL, "the North Carolina Justice Center and its affiliated brands make up the best known network of liberal-leaning groups in the state."[6]

As director, Fitzsimon delivered a daily radio commentary that was broadcast statewide on the North Carolina News Network, wrotes the daily Fitzsimon File, and hosted a weekly radio news magazine called News and Views.[2][4]
