Christopher Garland is the chief of staff for California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom. Formerly, Garland served as the deputy director for the California State Assembly speaker Fabian Núñez and a political director for the California Faculty Association.[1][2]

Career

After graduating from the University of Alabama in 1998, Christopher Garland became a legislative analyst and budget committee fellow for U.S. House Rep. Rush D. Holt Jr. (D-N.J.). Garland remained with Holt until 2001; during that time, Garland worked on press releases, speeches and legislation research.[1]

In 2001, Garland became the president of Predicted Lists, a list management and development firm. In 2004, the firm led the direct mail campaign for the Democratic National Committee.[1] While at Predicted Lists, Garland also served as the vice president and senior analyst for the now defunct MSHC Partners; the firm had such clients as Democratic National Committee, the AFL-CIO, EMILY's List, and the presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton (1992 and 1996), Al Gore, John Kerry (2004) and Hillary Clinton (2008).[3][1]

Garland served under California State Assembly speaker Fabian Núñez as Núñez's deputy director, where he oversaw the communications, outreach, and media operations of Núñez's office.[1][2] In 2007, Garland was appointed to the position of political director for the California Faculty Association (CFA), the union of California State University "professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors and coaches."[4]

In 2009, Garland announced his candidacy as the Democratic candidate for District 9 of the California State Assembly.[5][6] Garland lost in the primaries to Roger Dickinson.

Garland remained with the CFA until 2011, when he took a leave of absence to become California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom's chief of staff.[1][7]

Garland also serves as political director for Sean Parker, the co-founder of Napster and former president of Facebook.[8]

Highlighting Garland's political connections in the California and role with Parker, Recode described Garland as one of the "most powerful players in Silicon Valley" in August 2015.[8]
