Chris Gordon is a first-time candidate and a life-long resident of Wisconsin. Chris holds the people and places of the 39th Assembly District close to her heart and is committed to doing her best to work as a collaborator, spokesperson, advocate and leader for progressive change.

Chris is hard-working, ethical and open-minded. A career teacher and school administrator, Chris developed skills as a solution-oriented team builder able to bring diverse people with varying perspectives and beliefs together to identify their shared values and common goals.

Chris is married to Mark Johnson, the proud mother of two adult daughters and one adult son, and grandmother of a teenage girl. Chris is active in her church and has a wide range of interests and hobbies. Depending on the season of the year you may find her fishing, gardening, cooking, doing needlework, singing, reading. writing or learning to make art. Her happiest moments are spent outside with loved ones, including the family dog. Raised the oldest of seven children, Chris owes her moral code to that modeled by her loving working-class parents.
  • Chris Gordon is a rural Wisconsin resident working for the interests of rural Wisconsin. Over 95% of Wisconsin lands are designated as rural. Nearly a third of Wisconsin residents live in rural areas. The wellbeing and success of rural Wisconsin is in the best interest of all of Wisconsin.
  • Rural Wisconsinites need healthy communities, healthy resources and healthy change. Healthy communities need strong schools, medical services, durable infrastructure and a solid economic foundation. Healthy resources mean clean water, clean land and clean energy. Healthy change puts people before profits; freedom, dignity, health and opportunity for all; and government that is open, honest, responsive and accountable to Wisconsin people.
  • Chris Gordon is committed to work on solutions to problems facing Wisconsin people and Wisconsin places. She will collaborate with all stakeholders to develop policies and legislation investing in strong schools, vigorous economies and vital agricultural enterprises that protect the clean water and clean lands our lives depend on. She will demonstrate respect and an open mind in all dealings with all others.
As a lifelong resident of Wisconsin, I am committed to achieving the best for the people of my state. As a resident of Wisconsin’s 39th Assembly District I am especially dedicated to working on behalf of rural communities. The issues of public-school finance, accessible and affordable health care and clean and sustainable resources are of vital importance.
An effective legislator must be informed, open-minded and solution oriented. She must be able to build collaborative relationships, build coalitions and bring groups with diverse interests into consensus in achieving shared goals. She must ask insightful questions and listen carefully to the text and sub-text of every answer.
I’m a practiced and skilled collaborator who has had years of experience in working with others to build solutions to complex problems. Too often we hold the belief that there are only one or two ways to solve a problem. The good news is that there are nearly limitless ways to address an issue. When we collaborate in assessing problems and designing solutions, we can more effectively identify all possibilities before us. We can move past selfish partisanship and respond to problems in a fashion that is mutually beneficial.
An effective state legislator will conduct herself with integrity while working hard to
apply strong organizational and executive functioning and communication skills. The effective state legislator will be well informed relative to the needs, strengths, challenges, resources, and opportunities across her district and the state. She will be a skilled collaborator and negotiator able to lead others in the development of policies and legislation.
I want my legacy to be integrity and hard work.
I was a child during the cold war era. I remember the Civil Defense air raid drills we had at school and the solemn tension in the teacher’s voice. Each day of my grade school years we walked to the school lunchroom past barrels of provisions that were in storage for use by the community in the event of nuclear attack.
I loved my first job. I worked at the neighborhood bakery in the village where I grew up. I was in high school when I started, so on weekdays I would work in the afternoons or evenings. On weekends I generally opened at 5:30 in the morning or closed the shop at 7:00 in the evening. I learned so many skills and was given a lot of responsibilities. When I was in college I would get to work when I came home for the holidays so my colleagues could have a little time off. The best part was serving the customers because fresh bakery makes everyone happy.
Ideally, a governor and legislature will be collaborators in generating solutions for the citizens and the challenges they face.
Our greatest challenge is to heal the damage caused by excessive partisan divisiveness in government so that we can effectively address the threats to our success as a productive society. It is time to get back to the work of achieving freedom, dignity, health and opportunity for all.
Prior experience in government or politics can be of benefit because people can advance their skills and insights through experience. Prior experience in other fields can also be of benefit because a broader base of skills and insights can enable our government to function more effectively.
Legislators need to work to build positive relationships with one another because relationships are foundational to collegiality and effective collaboration.
My models are Robert LaFollette, William Proxmire and Gaylord Nelson. I will work to be a progressive reformer like Robert LaFollette. I will strive to be fiscally responsible and possess the work ethic of William Proxmire. I aspire to be an environmental champion following the model of Gaylord Nelson.
It is my goal to be an excellent Assembly Representative for the people of rural Wisconsin.
The hard work, community mindedness, and respect for the land and water demonstrated by my rural Wisconsin neighbors is both inspirational and impactful.
I spent my whole career in schools. The best jokes are the ones you can tell in a room full of kids.

Q: How come zombies never eat clowns?

A: Because they taste funny!
An emergency implies the need for an immediate and healing response. Should the legislature oversee or grant the use of emergency powers or the allocation of emergency funds the process of providing aid would be significantly slowed and could be held up by partisan politics.
One of my primary goals is to work to restructure school funding so that all students across the state have access to a first-rate education in safe and well-maintained facilities. The current model for school funding provides the best programs, support and facilities in affluent communities. Where the local tax base is not strong, educators struggle to make do without satisfactory facilities, resources or staffing to accomplish educational goals.
