Campaign themes
2014
McClure's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[2]
Education: SD is Last in Teacher Pay
- Excerpt: "South Dakota has the lowest teacher pay in the nation, it is 43% below the average teacher pay and $6,000 below every other state but Mississippi. We are losing our best teachers and it is significantly impacting our future. I taught as an adjunct professor at the Law School this year and can tell you first hand it's a hard job and our teachers deserve better. Plus, we are facing teacher shortages in many areas of South Dakota solely due to the low pay."
Medicaid Expansion: SD is Losing $420M
- Excerpt: "Medicaid Expansion is a common sense decision that somehow our legislature got wrong. The expansion would cover the working poor in South Dakota and it's paid for 100% with federal funds. That's $420 million dollars which is projected to lead to 1900 new jobs in 3 years that our legislature turned down over a 3 year period!"
Wages: SD is Last in Wages
- Excerpt: "We need to focus on getting better wages for our workers. South Dakota is consistently last in the nation in worker pay and while increasing the minimum wage to $8.50 is a good start, we need to find ways all or our workers to be adequately paid for their work."
