Minneapolis, Minnesota, held a general election for mayor, all 13 seats on the city council, both elected members of the board of estimate and taxation, and all nine members of the park and recreation board on November 7, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was August 15, 2017.

Incumbents ran for re-election to all but two of the city council seats. Ward 3 Councilman Jacob Frey filed to run for mayor instead, and Ward 8 Councilwoman Elizabeth Glidden opted not to run for re-election.[3]

Campaign themes

2017

Meyer's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE
The year 2016 was the hottest year in global recorded history. 2015 was the hottest year on record before that, and 2014 was the hottest year on record before that. This is a clear and terrifying trend, and we have a moral obligation to do everything we can to fight it. If elected, I will work to leverage Park Board resources to:

  • Transition Park-owned fleets to electric vehicles
  • Improve energy efficiency of park board buildings
  • Install solar panels on Park-owned property
  • Support urban agriculture and fruit-bearing trees to produce food locally
  • Improve winter sidewalk and bike lane maintenance, to make it easier to bike/walk in the winter
  • Support improved recycling efforts and add composting facilities to the parks

INVEST IN OUR YOUTH
By investing resources in our children we can improve graduation rates, reduce crime, and help children grow into thriving adults. I will work to:

  • Improve collaboration with the School Board on the use of park spaces and resources
  • Fully staff recreation centers
  • Restore funding for youth athletics
  • Establish youth programs centered on music, science, and the arts
  • Make youth programming automatically free for any child who qualifies for free or reduced-cost school lunch

PRO-LABOR POLICIES
As a field manager for Working America, I have spent a great deal of time advocating for pro-labor policies, and you can count on me to do so on the Park Board as well. I will:

  • Implement a $15 minimum wage for Park employees
  • Oppose the Park Board's current trend of outsourcing contracts to non-union labor
  • Reduce the levels of hierarchy between supervisors and regular employees
  • Support a 'Chop from the Top' plan to reduce 6-figure administrative salaries for Park Board management

BAN TOXIC PESTICIDES
The Park Board continues to use glyphosate, a toxic pesticide that the World Health Organization identified as a 'probable carcinogen.' It is being used to kill plants like dandelions, which are one of the earliest pollinator food sources to emerge in the spring. Numerous countries around the world have banned this toxin, and it's time for the Minneapolis Park Board to follow suit.[4]
