2017

Nettles' campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

I truly believe that all students should have access to a quality education. My goal is to utilize our resources effectively, assuring that college and career readiness is within reach for all students. We will organize and promote literacy for all students and their families regardless of their socioeconomic status.

As the Mayor of Fort Worth, I will:

  • Partner with non-profit organizations to help enhance our children’s ability to learn more efficiently. Ex: (Reading enhancement workshops and seminars for the entire family).
  • Encourage the continued collaboration between school board administrators, educators, students, families, and local businesses in an effort to rejuvenate our community commitment to literacy.
  • Promote advanced learning for Early Childcare/Headstart Programs.

Homelessness
Homelessness has continuously increased over the last six years. As of right now, there are 1,986 citizens in the city of Fort Worth who don’t have an adequate place to lie their heads at night. Addressing this crisis requires a helping hand from all walks of life because homelessness is not restricted to any one race, gender, or religion.

As the Mayor of Fort Worth, I will:

  • Review our existing Homeless Prevention Initiative and make adjustments as necessary to increase the probability of making our initiatives work.
  • Establish an ongoing collaborative meeting to discuss progress towards our goals.
  • Embrace new partnerships with businesses, local apartment communities, property owners, and transitional homes.
  • Create self-sufficiency programs to educate our citizens on resume writing, family budgets, and interview preparation.
  • Address current eviction protocols and enforce Fort Worth and Texas Apartment Association mandates.

Fiscal Responsibility
A strong economy starts with developing our inner-city communities and bringing in more small business. Our city thrives when our inner-city communities thrive. I will find ways to keep our tax rates low while boosting our economy.

As the Mayor of Fort Worth, I will:

  • Be a good steward of tax dollars and the city budget.
  • Keep tax rates and fees low.
  • Dedicate time to bring in more jobs, thereby boosting the economy.
  • Work with City Council members to improve budget allocation for all citizens.

Public Transportation
As a growing city, we need to continually monitor the condition of our streets, roads, and highways to provide a safe means of travel throughout the city. We must continue to attract business and tourism by improving our transportation system.

As the Mayor of Fort Worth, I will:

  • Work hand and hand with the Texas Department of Transportation to improve our roadways.
  • Ensure future plans for our neighborhood transit includes more bus and bicycle trail routes.

Public Safety
We must do everything possible to heal our police and community relationships. Serving and protecting all citizens despite their race, sex, or religious beliefs will forever be our motto. We will grow stronger together when all residents begin to trust and respect officers and those in authoritative positions. Police officers must do the same in respect to the communities they are responsible for.

As the Mayor of Fort Worth, I will:

  • Support the greater use of the internet and email alerts for public safety purposes.
  • Form a 13 member Citizens Review Board (CRB) tasked with conducting reviews and investigations into the Fort Worth Police Department’s use of force policies, practices and procedures.

Neighborhoods. Recreation. Quality of Life
The foundation of any city lies witihin its neighborhoods. The life of a community begins and ends with the people of that community and their families. Fort Worth is only as strong as its weakest parts. I am determined to build from within to ensure the continued growth of this great city.

As Mayor of Fort Worth, I will:

  • Work everyday to make our city thrive, soar and reach its fullest potential.
  • Promote a stronger, healthier Fort Worth by improving and expanding all of Fort Worth recreational facilities.
  • Encourage private sponsorship of events and programs that contribute to improving the health and wellness of city’s citizens.
  • Develop programs to endorse fun and exercise for kids so that they spend less time inside and more time outside in the fresh air of our city.
  • Offer partnership with youth entertainment companies to occupy available land. This will give them the opportuntiy to branch out and expand their businesses and provide the cultural experience our youth have thus far gone without.
  • Work with citizens to keep city neighborhoods safe, physically attractive, and pedestrian-friendly by developing neighborhood assoications and a neighborhood block watch.
  • Increase access for an aging population to walking paths and pet friendly parks.

Transparency
Our city has lacked transparency from time to time dealing with certain issues. To be transparent, the truth must be shown inside and out, allowing light to be shed on all concerns. I vow to be honest with our city on every level of government.

As the Mayor of Forth Worth, I will:

  • Instill within the City Council members a sense of honesty and open communication.
  • Motivate the police department to be transparent with our communities.
  • Be open to new and fresh ideas from the citizens of Fort Worth.[4]
