A vote about whether to recall Chris Shelton from his position as chairperson of the Mica Kidd Island Fire District board of commissioners took place on November 4, 2014.[1] Shelton was recalled from his position.[2]

Shelton was in his third year of his first four-year term on the board of commissioners at the time of the recall election.[3]

He was accused of losing "touch with the desires and wishes" of his constituents, proposing a "burdensome and intrusive" fee schedule and holding an illegal executive meeting. The last claim was deemed untrue by a district attorney and prosecutor.[1]

Shelton opponents

The recall petition said, "Commissioner Shelton has lost touch with the desires and wishes of the (Mica Kidd Island) community, resulting in a loss of confidence in his willingness and ability to represent the citizens of the district in which he was elected to serve." The petition also mentioned a "burdensome and intrusive" proposed fee. Furthermore, recall supporters argued that Shelton "willfully and defiantly conducted an executive session and an unnoticed commissioners' meeting contrary to Idaho state statutes, on July 25."[3]

Gretchen Hauser and James King played a large role in petition circulation.[3]

Shelton supporters

Shelton replied to critics, "The only thing I've ever wanted to do was do the right thing. I have no other agenda than that."[3]

Following an investigation into what recall proponents claimed was an illegal executive session, a prosecutor and the district's attorney determined that no wrongdoing was done.[1]
