Christian Honl was a candidate for Position 4 representative on the Hillsboro School Board in Oregon. He lost in the general election on May 19, 2015.

Over five years after the first proposal was made, it appeared a land swap between Hillsboro School District and neighboring Beaverton School District might finally move forward in 2015. While there was vocal debate in Hillsboro, which was the point of instigation for the proposed district changes, Beaverton had not responded to calls to meet and discuss the change as of late April 2015.

Honl provided the following statement on his campaign website:

As a manager for Intel Corporation over the last 15 years, I’ve learned the most significant thing you can do as a leader is to provide direction and guidance and fulfill the needs of those who rely on you. I will employ these same skills to providing a pathway for success in our schools, supporting our teachers, and first and foremost, making educating our kids our first priority.

Creativity and innovation. We need to improve and update the technology in our schools. I will work with teachers and experts in the community on how we can use creative and innovative technological methods of teaching in the classroom.

The next generation. The success of Oregon’s future depends on the quality of education we provide to our kids now. By working with local colleges and businesses, we can set students up for their future in higher education and the workforce.

Listen and learn. With 15 years of management experience, I know how to build consensus, and I will work with board members, parents, students, staff and our legislators to problem-solve and support the district to the best of our ability.

Collaborative solutions. We must collaborate to find long-term solutions, not quick-fixes, to funding the needs in our district while protecting our quality of education. By putting students first and working together, we will achieve great results even within tight budget challenges and constraints.

As your school board director, I will:

  • Provide experienced leadership, management skills, and a fresh perspective to decision-making
  • Bring creative and innovative teaching methods to the classroom through technology
  • Establish greater relationships between our schools and the business community
  • Develop partnerships with local colleges and businesses to prepare students for their future in higher education and the workforce
  • Prioritize spending and require more transparency about allocations of funds
  • Collaborate with students, parents, teachers, staff and administrators to determine needs
  • Build consensus among board members to problem-solve and support the district to the best of our ability
  • Find ways to reduce classroom sizes, giving our teachers more one-on-one time with students
  • Work closely with our state legislators to ensure Hillsboro’s needs are being addresses at the state level[4]
