Christina Clair Reiss is the chief judge of the United States District Court for the District of Vermont. She joined the court in 2009 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. Reiss previously served as chief judge from 2010 to 2017.

Early life and education

A native of Denver, Colorado, Reiss earned her bachelor's degree from St. Michael's College in 1984 and her J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1989.[1]

Reiss was nominated by President Barack Obama on October 13, 2009, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Vermont vacated by John Murtha. The American Bar Association rated Reiss Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Reiss' nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on November 4, 2009, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on November 19, 2009. Reiss was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on November 21, 2009, and she received her commission on December 21, 2009. She served as the chief judge of the district court from 2010 to 2017. In 2024, Reiss became the chief judge of the court again.[1][2][3]
