An effort to recall Christine Dye from her position as a member of the Cedar Grove School District Board of Education in New Jersey resulted in her resignation. The Essex County Clerk's Office verified enough petition signatures to put a recall election against Dye on the ballot. She resigned instead of having her name be put on the ballot.[1][2]

The recall petitions seeking to remove Dye from her position were approved for circulation in April 2022.[3] The Essex County Clerk's Office certified that enough signatures had been collected on June 30, 2022.[1]

Dye served as the board's president in the spring of 2021 when the district sent students in grades three through 12 a survey without consent from parents. The survey asked students about their gender, race, and religious affiliation. The New Jersey Commission of Education ruled that sending out the survey violated two state statutes.[3][4]

In response to the recall effort, Dye wrote a letter to the editor saying that all five board members had agreed to send out the survey. She also said, "Violating a state statute is not the same as breaking the law." Dye said that the Commission of Education did not fine or punish the board.[5]

The county notified Dye of the signature certification on June 30, 2022.[1]
