I came to Kitsap County in 1992 to work as a young environmental planner, and my husband and I raised our two now-adult daughters here. While most of our family pets are no longer with us, we still maintain a small flock of egg-producing hens.

Prior to my appointment as Kitsap County Commissioner, I served our area in the Washington State legislature from 2007-2023. In that role, I worked closely with local elected and community leaders and brought the ideas and concerns of our neighbors to the state capitol. I was the Chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee for 6 years, leading the 49-member body in the development of our state's $65+billion state budget and leading on issues like school funding, fish and wildlife conservation, and transportation.

In the past year I have brought my experiences problem-solving and weaving together different values and interests to help provide a more transparent, inclusive, and responsive county government.
  • The work of the three Commissioners is especially important as county residents deliberate how we will manage future population growth. We must protect sensitive environmental areas while providing a diversity of affordable housing options in safe and healthy neighborhoods that people love to live in.
  • Over the coming years I will continue to lead local partnerships with state and federal officials, including the US Navy, to resolve transportation challenges at Gorst, the Hood Canal Bridge, and Highways 104 and 305, and to to modernize and expand our access to health care services and behavioral health treatment.
  • I will continue to champion preservation of our remaining forests, open spaces, and small farms and the protection of Puget Sound, while supporting infrastructure and education advancements that help create job opportunities here.
I am personally passionate about representative democracy and making sure that everyone has equal access to their government and the opportunity to help craft solutions to community challenges.

I entered public service to make sure that we protect our natural environment and provide open spaces, parks, and healthy fish and wildlife populations for future generations. I remain committed to those ideals.
The following characteristics are the most important for an elected official: personal integrity, a commitment to fairness and public service, a strong work ethic, an ability to empathize with a variety of people, and a healthy sense of humor.
This is seriously my favorite joke. I learned it while working as a housekeeper at a lodge in Yellowstone National Park as a young person:

What did the mother buffalo say to her baby as she was leaving the meadow?

Bi-son.
I have been endorsed by the Kitsap County Democrats, Washington Conservation Action, the Farm Bureau, Laborers Local 252, National Women's Political Caucus of WA, all living previous County Commissioners of District 1, and many elected and local leaders, friends, and neighbors.
