Christopher Canning

Christopher S. Canning is the former village president of Wilmette, Illinois. He was first elected on April 5, 2005. As president, Canning also served as the chair of the Village’s Business Development Advisory Group and the chair of the Fire Pension Board.

Canning was born and raised in Wilmette and has lived in Wilmette for over 44 years.[1]

Political history

Prior to running for the position of village president, Canning served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for seven years. For three of those years, he was the chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals.[1]

Career and education

Canning graduated from Loyola Academy, and he earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College. He later earned his law degree from Loyola University School of Law in Chicago.[1]

Canning entered the workforce at the international law firm Winston and Strawn where he worked for 12 years. In 2000, he became the general counsel of One-On-One Sports, the nation’s largest sports talk radio network. That same year One-on-One Sports merged with The Sporting News whereupon Canning became vice president and general counsel of Vulcan Sports Media and the secretary of its board of directors. In 2006, Canning became president of Vulcan Sports Media.[1]

Community involvement

Canning served as a member of Evanston Hospital’s Community Advisory Council, and he served as the initial school board president for the reopening of St. Joseph School in Wilmette from 1998 to 2001. Canning also coached youth basketball, softball, and baseball.[1]
