Chris Christensen is a fifth generation Oregonian with family roots throughout the state. Chris was educated in the Portland Public School system and is a graduate of Jesuit High School and the University of San Diego. Chris currently lives and works in Beaverton. Chris was the 2020 GOP congressional candidate in Oregon's first Congressional district and received a record number of votes in the 2020 General election for that district. Chris is educated, experienced, committed and determined to represent the voice of all Oregonians while serving in Washington D.C. as United States Senator. Earlier in his life, Chris lived for more than a decade near America's southern border; He knows, the people, the politics and the culture of the region firsthand; He even speaks a little bit of Spanish! Chris Christensen is the right choice for United States Senate from Oregon in 2022.
  • Chris Christensen Is The Right Choice For United States Senate from Oregon in 2022
  • My Top Priority For Oregon Will Be To Secure Federal Resources to Start Construction On the New I-5 Columbia River Bridge.
  • Time For Change: I Will Support An Amendment to the Constitution Establishing Term Limits For Congress
The areas I am most passionate about are the areas that affect people's lives the most: the local economy, energy, cost of goods & services, housing, education, transportation, infrastructure and public safety. At the federal level, securing the southern border, modernizing our national defense capabilities and building the domestic infrastructure needed to keep America strong will be a top priority.
I have to say that none of this would have ever happened had I not had the political and spiritual legacy of Omer Madison Kem, my great, great grandfather. He served in congress from 1890-1896 as a Populist from Nebraska. He paved the way for many of the progressive ideas our country later adopted and his political diary has given me a unique roadmap to running a political campaign at the federal level and the nuances of serving in the United States Congress. He laid the groundwork over 130 years ago for my 2022 U.S. Senate campaign and, were it not for him and other progressive Americans, many of the freedoms that we, the people, now enjoy, would have never been possible. Kem was a farmer turned politician; I learned from him that if you plant a seed and nurture the roots, then you'll bear the fruits of your efforts.
There is an old movie called "The Candidate" starring Robert Redford and Peter Boyle from 1972; just flip the parties and you have the story of an upstart independent grassroots politician taking on the long term incumbent senior Senator and powerful Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Crocker Jarman (Ron Wyden). The story has a wildfire management scene ("I'm forming a Task Force"), a great debate scene where the incumbent cracks under pressure, and a great ending line...

"What do we do now"?

I love that movie!
Some of the qualities that make a good advocate or politician are:
High "EQ", self-confidence, the ability to inspire others, good communication skills, have passion for the role, be committed, intelligent, experienced, be a goal setter, a good decision maker, a good politician learns from their mistakes, can accepts criticism and tries to better themselves and those around them. A good politician should lead by example and build trust in others; Most importantly, a good leader must first be a good listener so that they can serve successfully as the voice of the people. Greatness is within the grasp of any politician who practices most of these qualities.

The job of a senator is to act on behalf of the American people in legislative sessions to ensure the voice of the common citizen is heard. The role of a United States Senator is both well defined and multi-faceted.
Among other powers, United States Senators make all laws, declare war, regulate interstate and foreign commerce and controls taxing and spending policies. U.S. Senators enact legislation, oversee the implementation of laws, listen to constituents, drafting and introduction of legislation; helping constituents solve problems and representing the interests of their districts and constituents. U.S. Senators are expected to represent the people and district according to the wishes of the majority; to solve problems in the district; and to keep in contact with the people in the district through regular visits and meetings in the district and polls or questionnaires.
1. When elected, I will promote the passage of an amendment to the Constitution to impose term limits on members of Congress

2. When elected, I will aggregate the federal resources needed to begin construction on the Bridge replacement over the Columbia River on I-5.

3. When elected, I will serve a single term in the United States Senate, opening the door for future Oregon senators to follow and furthering the concept of a government that is truly of, by and for the people.
There have been many. I watched the construction of Portland's Fremont Bridge in the early 1970's from my bedroom in NW Portland while growing up and will always remember the hoisting of the center span; I remember watching the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens in May of 1980 just as I was finishing my junior year at Jesuit high School; When I was very young, too young to remember, my parents moved to Alabama during the heights of civil unrest in the early 1960's; I also remember when Robin Marks was crowned Queen of Portland's Rose Festival, we went to school together at Chapman and Lincoln and I remember her being a great athlete and a very strong independent young person, that was a proud and happy moment for all of Portland.
My first "real" job was working as a dishwasher at Jake's Restaurant in downtown Portland. Prior to that, i worked for my dad's company making and assembling "Minibrute" chainsaws (he invented of the first battery operated chainsaw) in NW Portland on Glisan Street. My dad had an employee named Dale at the time who was down on his luck and one of Portland's vulnerable "skid row" residents. I learned early on about working for a living and giving others a hand up, not a handout. Dale wasn't the most reliable employee - sometimes he would show up and sometimes he wouldn't - but when he did show up, he always gave an honest days work for an honest days pay.

Bond. James Bond. (Sean Connery/Roger Moore era)
God Bless the U.S.A. by Lee Greenwood; Also, "LIve Together" by Lisa Stansfield
My struggles have become my strengths. When elected, I hope to end federal government tyranny and oppression of individuals and businesses by way of easing their tax burden, increasing the discretionary income of families & working Americans, and simplifying or eliminate the need for annual mandatory income reporting to the Internal Revenue Service.
The greatest challenges we face as a nation over the next decade include immigration reform, affordable health care, the environment, education and limiting the size & scope of government at all levels. We also face the omnipresent existential threat of global conflict and the unanticipated disruptions that could occur as a result of sovereign disputes between nuclear powers or the acts of rogue nations or terrorists.
I support a constitutional amendment on term limits.

I will serve a single term when elected.
This is a primary plank of my candidacy.
The incumbent in this race has served more than 40 years in Congress.
Only a vote of the people will remove him from office.
This is NOT an ideal representative government.

Term limits are needed in congress to maintain a government that is truly controlled by the people and not by special, powerful lobbyist groups that establish insider relationships and access to decision makers.
The United States Senate is unique because it's decisions affect policy at every level. The United States Senate has fairly apportioned representation (2) amongst the states regardless of a state's size or population giving it a more balanced makeup than the House of Representatives. With the passage of the 17th Amendment in 1913 giving power to the people to directly elect Senators, our nation was given an opportunity not previously bestowed in the Constitution. The Senate is unique in that Senators are elected from a statewide vote and serve at the national level, giving them the role of steward at both the state ad federal level. U.S. Senators generally possess a higher level of education than other elected offices. 100% of current sitting U.S. Senators holding elected office have a bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.)or higher, many with advanced degrees (MA; PhD; JD; MBA) in law, medicine, education or finance. It is imperative that voters, tasked with the responsibility of choosing the BEST candidate for the role, should consider each candidate's level of education, experience and knowledge when making that important decision.
In a government of, by and for the people, it is more important to have critical thinking, fair and just decision making and an honest, fresh perspective. This is often accomplished by bringing in new ideas, new experiences, new viewpoints. I do not believe that a United States Senator needs to have prior governmental experience but they do need to have a strong sense of the political landscape, history and policies of the office they seek.
I think the filibuster should be kept; I would retain the filibuster in its current form. In the current congress, the filibuster is needed in order to thwart liberal policy priorities that otherwise would pass with a simple majority vote of 51. Since V.P Harris would hold the deciding vote on legislation, it is imperative that the filibuster remain in tact in its current form.
When given the opportunity to confirm presidential appointments, senators should carefully explore a nominee’s character, qualifications, and policy views. Some presidential appointments require the approval of the Senate but many do not. Aside from Cabinet secretaries and Supreme Court justices, whose nominations require the approval of the Senate, the President of the United States has the authority to appoint people to high-level positions within the federal government unilaterally. Presidential Appointments with Senate confirmation (PAS) positions are the top of the federal personnel "food chain" and include positions such as cabinet agency secretaries, top administrators, and deputy administrators of the non-cabinet agencies. Holders of PAS positions have direct responsibility for implementing the administration's goals and policies. These appointees must be responsible, accountable, and flexible enough to work within the political spectrum with all of its varying perspectives and viewpoints.
I would gladly serve on any committee as assigned, however, given my druthers, I hope to serve on any of the following Senate committees: The Senate Appropriations Committee; the Senate Armed Services Committee; The Senate Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs Committee; the Senate Finance Committee or the Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry committee. I would actively serve in a variety of additional sub-committees and caucuses in addition to my primary committee assignments.
Mark Hatfield. He served first as Governor of Oregon, then for 30 years as United States Senator from Oregon. Hatfield also served as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee on two occasions. With this role, he was able to direct funding to Oregon projects. One of my top priorities when I get elected will be to leverage my influence in the Senate to secure the federal funding and support needed to start construction on the long overdue Columbia River/I-5 Bridge project. This signature project is an immediate need and will benefit millions of people in the state and the region when completed. To complete the project, we need to start the project; to start the project, Oregon voters need to elect Chris Christensen to United States Senate in 2022; He'll fix it.
A thief jumps out from a dark alley and says to a passer-by, “Give me your money.” The gentleman, shocked by the sudden attack, says “You can't do this, I’m a United States Senator!” The thief says, “Well, in that case, give me MY money!
The U.S. Constitution establishes ” checks and balances ” among the powers of the executive, legislative and judiciary branches. The nomination process of federal judges is an important part of this system.
The Appointments Clause of the United States Constitution empowers the president to appoint certain public officials with the “advice and consent” of the U.S. Senate. Some of the character traits I would seek in a judicial nominee forwarded to the Senate for consideration would be: independence, open-mindedness, integrity, courage, empathy, sensitivity, Intellect, fairness, good judgment, perceptiveness, stamina, determination, industrious and a passion for vigorous internal debate aimed at diluting an issue to it's most salient points. A judicial nominee should have strong writing skills, be a good listener, and an excellent verbal and non-verbal communicator.
In theory, the system of checks and balances is designed to ensure that no single branch has too much power over the other branches. As James Madison wrote in Federalist Number 51 (1788), “the power surrendered by the people is first divided between two distinct governments [the Federal government and the governments of the several states], and then the portion allotted to each subdivided among distinct and separate departments [the executive, the legislative, and the judicial].”
As humans, we sometimes think ‘my idea is better.’ But when you reflect on all points of view, have a conversation with others, take the time to really dig in to an issue, you then see the value in other, different perspectives. The result is often an improvement on the original idea. The kind of relationships I would build with other U.S. senators would be one that would start with listening, taking lots of notes, working hard towards consensus, and, eventually building mutual trust and respect while maintaining one's own independence.
The true meaning of the word “compromise,” is “a mutual promise.” It properly describes an agreement reached through mutual concessions, or an acceptable adjustment between conflicting ideas or desires. It may also require the presence of a third or disinterested party as arbiter.

There are those who maintain that any compromise is evil or shameful because it may involve some surrender of “principle” or freedom. However, compromise is not a diminution of one’s freedom or free agency, because the scriptures are full of admonitions to use our freedom in the service of others and not for our selfish ends. (e.g. Christ said, “Agree with thine adversary quickly.” [Matt. 5:25.]).
In our American form of government, the responsibility to find solutions to the problems of our citizens rests chiefly upon the Congress. Nearly every issue that comes to Congress for a solution represents a conflict of interest between groups or forces within our society or our economy, or between other elements of the government itself—conflicts which those involved have been either unable or unwilling to resolve themselves. So compromise is an important element in lawmaking, the search for a combination of ideas that will not only provide the highest level of satisfaction for each and all of the groups whose interests are in conflict, but also, of necessity, attract the support of the needed majority to get legislation passed.

Must a legislator sacrifice his moral standards when he votes for a compromise? Never, unless he makes his personal decision for dishonorable reasons such as personal gain or paid-for political support. The most effective legislator is one who always keeps himself free to use his best judgment in doing all he can to see that every bill on which he works contains the best possible and fairest possible balance between the interests of the various entities that will be affected by it.

Campaign website

Christensen's campaign website stated the following:

MY ANCESTOR SERVED IN CONGRESS IN THE 1890'S AND FOUGHT FOR THE ELECTION OF U.S. SENATORS BY THE PEOPLE. PRIOR TO THAT, STATE GOVERNMENTS APPOINTED SENATORS AND THE PEOPLE HAD NO INPUT IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS. WHY AM I RUNNING TO WIN A SEAT IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE? SIMPLE. BECAUSE I CAN.

THE 17TH AMENDMENT

ON THE ECONOMY

I believe that free market capitalism, private property rights, low taxation, domestic energy independence, minimal regulation, and limited political and government intervention are the foundations of a vibrant and prosperous economy.

ON CONGRESSIONAL TERM LIMITS AND LIMITED GOVERNMENT AUTHORITY

I advocate limiting the scope and jurisdiction of the Federal Government, addressing abuses in the commerce and general welfare clauses, and I support enacting term limits on all elected political members of Congress.

ON TAXES

Our tax code is a political mess, and that's putting it lightly. Multiple brackets, High rates, special interest breaks everywhere, rules and regulations that are too complicated to understand. It costs more and more each year just to do your taxes, let alone pay them. All of this places a heavy burden upon the people and leaves businesses prostrated in paperwork and compliance problems. So instead of promoting growth, our tax code has pushed jobs overseas; And the agency charged with overseeing all of this--the IRS--has repeatedly violated the trust of the American taxpayer. We need a new tax code. It needs to be fair and simple for everyone. It should be so simple that most Americans can do their taxes on a form as simple as a postcard. Our tax code should be built for growth, it should be simple and fair, it should promote jobs and growth, and expand opportunity for all Americans. Tax rates on small businesses should be low so that Main Streets across America can thrive. The IRS should be more service oriented. The agency should reduce red tape, clear out the bureaucracy by doing away with all the abusive rules, excessive regulations, wasteful forms, and instructions that wouldn’t be needed with a simpler, fairer tax code. My plan matches a simpler, fairer tax code with a simpler, fairer IRS that puts taxpayers first. I will support a full repeal of the death tax. Oregonians, please elect Chris Christensen candidate for United States Senate from Oregon 2022.

ON IMMIGRATION

America recognizes and values the many contributions of legal immigrants. I encourage legal immigration and assimilation, including the adoption of English as the official language. I recognize that securing our national borders is essential to ensuring the sovereignty and safety of our state. All publicly-funded entities shall comply with federal immigration laws and cooperate with their enforcement. I oppose and abhor current or future policies or practices of any governmental administration that encourages or allows the unfettered flood of unvetted immigrants into our nation. A porous border puts our nation at risk. The surge of illegal immigrants across our borders cannot just be a wake-up call--it must be a call to action. As a nation of laws, we must insist that everyone come here legally and maintain legal status. A porous border puts our communities and our nation at risk. America must secure the border once and for all by accelerating the deployment of fencing, technology, air assets, and personnel. We must also protect our country and promote fairness by enforcing our immigration laws. Americans know our borders are not secure--and so do criminals, drug cartels, and violent extremists. A flood of illicit traffic across our borders has destabilized communities and damaged our national security. The problem is vast. Securing the borders is no small task, but it is a fundamental responsibility of our government. Make no mistake: The borders are not secure, and the threats along them are growing more dynamic by the day. There must be strong workplace enforcement with tough penalties against employees and employers who violate immigration laws. We oppose amnesty because it would have the effect of encouraging illegal immigration and would give an unfair advantage to those who have broken our laws.

ON SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS

All people have the unalienable right to defend themselves, others, their home, and their lives without fear of criminal or civil reprisal. All law-abiding citizens have the right to keep and bear arms in a manner of their choosing without government infringement and I support interstate reciprocity of all government-issued concealed carry licenses.

ON VOTING RIGHTS & ELECTION INTEGRITY

I support election integrity that contains the following components: an official ballot prepared and printed at public expense on which the names of all nominated candidates of all parties and proposals shall appear, ballots that are fairly and lawfully distributed only to current registered legal voters, ballots shall be marked in secret, expressing the will of the individual voter with no undo outside influence. This, and only this, will express the true will of the People. Mail in ballots, as they are distributed to voter’s homes, have no guarantee that they are marked secretly. Primary elections shall be bound to party membership. The citizens’ right to initiative, referendum, and recall shall not be infringed. All ballots not received by 8 pm on Election Day shall not be counted. It is the inherent responsibility of each individual citizen to submit their ballot in a timely fashion.

ON EDUCATION

I believe that all children deserve an excellent, quality and unbiased education. Families have the primary right and responsibility to educate their children in the manner they choose. I support parental choice in education and will advocate for direct funding to families for the educational path of their choosing through federal community development block grants. I will support comprehensive STEM vocational programs with career tracking and mentorship support for all.

ON HEALTH CARE

Families and individuals have the sole responsibility and right to make their own healthcare decisions. A free market system of health insurance and health care delivery is the surest way to provide high-quality, affordable, physical and mental health care that preserves individual freedom and privacy. We advocate the protection of the physician-patient relationship, the promotion of competition and the provision of individual freedom.

ON FOREIGN POLICY

I believe that foreign policy decisions must adhere to the United States Constitution, based upon the security, vital long-term national interests, sovereignty, and well-being of its citizens. I support the policy of America First, Peace Through Strength.

ON NATIONAL DEFENSE

I support a robust, full strength, and modern military. I support the most up to date, state of the art equipment, and training for our servicemembers both active duty and Guard/Reserve component. I support the policy of America First, Peace Through Strength. If it fires, flies, floats or foils...I like it.

ON GOVERNMENT INTEGRITY & SPECIAL PRIVILEGE

Limited, responsible, and transparent government at all levels is essential. Government shall not issue special privileges or funding by select category of persons, which are not available to all citizens. Recalls, Initiatives or referenda decided by the people should not be overturned or obstructed by the legislature. The Judicial branch must refrain from activism and government overreach. All levels of government should operate within the confines of a balanced budget.

ON ENERGY POLICY

The current Administration has burdened Americans with costly regulations that have shed American jobs and domestic energy production. I support policies that would reverse the regulations on American jobs and energy production. I would increase domestic energy production and remove regulations that hinder American energy independence. I will work tirelessly to free American industry and ingenuity from the constraints of Government overreach. For decades leaders have peddled the myth of energy scarcity. Most of it is self-imposed. What the country needs isn't "alternative" energy, or new austerity measures; It's a government that "promotes sustainable domestic energy development."[3]

Chris is a long term community member and fifth generation Oregon resident. Raised in NW Portland and currently a resident of Beaverton working in Hillsboro, Chris has the background and experience to successfully balance the needs of all of the citizens of District 1. Steeped in family traditions from public service to logging to agriculture, Chris plans to leverage his knowledge of what makes Oregon special and balance the federal representation of Oregon's congressional caucus.
  • I believe that free markets and individual achievement are the primary factors behind economic prosperity.
  • Economic prosperity and environmental protection must advance together, environmental regulations should be based on science, the government's role should be to provide market-based incentives to develop the technologies to meet environmental standards, we should ensure that environmental policy meets the needs of localities, and environmental policy should focus on achieving results.
  • I believe that government should be smaller, smarter and more efficient.
I believe that our Constitution should be honored, valued, and upheld.

I will work hard towards a bipartisan solution to infrastructure and transportation improvements in the region; Build the Bridge!

The U.S. House of Representatives represents the voice of the people. The Constitution grants the U.S. House of Representatives a unique set of powers in the federal government, embodying the framers' intent to make it uniquely responsive to the will of the people. The House of Representatives is the only branch of government that has been directly elected by American voters since its formation in 1789.

Longer House terms would allow members to escape the cycle of "perpetual campaigning". The founders argued that two years was a good balance, long enough to allow first-term House members to attain knowledge and experience in office, while also short enough to allow them to be accountable to their constituents through frequent-enough elections.

"No man can be a competent legislator who does not add to an upright intention and a sound judgment a certain degree of knowledge of the subjects on which he is to legislate. A part of this knowledge may be acquired by means of information which lie within the compass of men in private as well as public stations. Another part can only be attained, or at least thoroughly attained, by actual experience in the station which requires the use of it."

Odds of passage

Any constitutional amendment would need to be approved by two-thirds of both the House and Senate, as well as three-quarters of the states' legislatures. That's an extremely tall order, having only been done once in the past 45 years and never in the past 25.
Omer Madison Kem, Populist Congressman from Nebraska (1891-1897)
ROLL ON COLUMBIA, ROLL ON

Roll on, Columbia, roll on
Roll on, Columbia, roll on
Your power is turning our darkness to dawn
So roll on, Columbia, roll on
Green Douglas firs where the waters cut through
Down her wild mountains and canyons she flew
Canadian Northwest to the oceans so blue
Roll on Columbia, roll on
Other great rivers add power to you
Yakima, Snake, and the Klickitat, too
Sandy Willamette and Hood River too
So roll on, Columbia, roll on
Tom Jefferson's vision would not let him rest
An empire he saw in the Pacific Northwest
Sent Lewis and Clark and they did the rest
So roll on, Columbia, roll on
It's there on your banks that we fought many a fight
Sheridan's boys in the blockhouse that night
They saw us in death but never in flight
So roll on Columbia, roll on
At Bonneville now there are ships in the locks
The waters have risen and cleared all the rocks
Shiploads of plenty will steam past the docks
So roll on, Columbia, roll on
And on up the river is Grand Coulee Dam
The mightiest thing ever built by a man
To run the great factories and water the land
So roll on, Columbia, roll on
These mighty men labored by day and by night
Matching their strength 'gainst the river's wild flight
Through rapids and falls, they won the hard fight
So roll on, Columbia, roll on
