Christopher Porrino is a former nonpartisan attorney general of New Jersey. He was appointed to the position on June 16, 2016, by Governor Chris Christie (R) to replace outgoing Attorney General Robert Lougy (R). Porrino was sworn in as acting attorney general on June 21, 2016, unanimously approved by the New Jersey State Senate on August 1, 2016, and formally sworn in as attorney general on August 2, 2016.[1][2][3][4] He served until January 16, 2018, when he was succeeded by Gurbir Grewal (D).[5]

Porrino is a graduate of Lehigh University and earned his juris doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law. From 2004-2012, Porrino was a partner and vice-chair of the litigation department at the law firm of Lowenstein Sandler. He then served as the director of the Division of Law within the attorney general's office from 2012 to 2014 before becoming chief counsel to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R). He departed that position in July 2015 to resume private practice.

Porrino lives in Union County, New Jersey.[3]

Political career

New Jersey attorney general (2016-2018)

Porrino began his term as attorney general on June 21, 2016. He was named as acting attorney general on June 16, 2016, to replace Robert Lougy (R), who stepped down after Christie nominated him to the New Jersey Superior Court the prior month.[2] Porrino was sworn in as acting attorney general on June 21, 2016. He served on an interim basis until he was confirmed by the New Jersey State Senate on August 1, 2016, in a unanimous vote.[1] At the time of his swearing-in, he was the first confirmed attorney general to hold the office in over three years. Lougy's predecessor John Hoffman served for three years without being confirmed by the Senate. [6]
