Christy Cummings knows educational standards well, having earned her Master’s degree in Psychology from Regis University in Denver with a focus on mental health and child development. She has made a career of teaching Special Education and English Language Learners in Middle School, High School and Community College settings as well as teaching English as a Second Language and Psychology at Colorado Mountain College, Metropolitan State University, and the Colorado Community College System. Her clinical experience includes working with children, adolescents, and families in a community mental health center on the western slope.

Based on her experience, Christy has been impressed with the education her three children have received at APS charter and magnet schools. Her motto is “Aurora Public Schools are the best kept secret in Colorado.” As such, with APS students losing valuable education opportunities due to the COVID pandemic, Christy has joined the call to run for Aurora Public Schools Board of Education Director this November with the goal of helping the district address the needs of the whole child. Her focus will be the mental health, social-emotional well-being, and educational achievement of our APS children and teens as they face the challenges of growing and learning.

  • My first priority is to remediate the learning loss that occurred due to the pandemic
  • My second priority is to address the mental heath and social-emotional needs of students due to the pandemic.
  • My third focus is to represent mothers and their concerns across APS. Mothers need access to information regarding how to best advocate for their children.
I am passionate about the fact that only 22.5% of APS 3rd - 8th grades could read on grade level in the Spring of 2021. I am passionate about a large budget that doesn't seem to be keeping class sizes in the younger grades small enough for students to get the reading and math instruction that they need. I am a prochoice candidate concerned that parents have the options to choose the best schools that suit their students' needs, whether it be a neighborhood, charter, magnet or options school.
