Alabama: Today Governor Robert Bentley appointed Charles Malone to succeed Sue Bell Cobb as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Malone has most recently served as chief of staff for the governor, but prior to that was Presiding Circuit Judge on the Circuit 6 Court in Tuscaloosa County.[1]

Malone said, "My entire career has prepared me with a solid foundation to serve as the Chief Justice and to uphold our state constitution and the constitution of the United States of America. It has been an honor to serve in Governor Bentley’s administration and I thank him for this opportunity to return to the bench."[1]

The new Chief Justice must run for the seat in the 2012 election if he wishes to continue serving. His current term expires in January 2013.[2]
