Four of seven seats on the Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education in Ohio were up for at-large general election on November 7, 2017. Three incumbents sought re-election. Incumbents Melanie Bates and Ericka Copeland-Dansby and newcomers Ryan Messer and Mike Moroski defeated incumbent Daniel Minera, former candidate Marcia A. Futel, and newcomers Jacqueline Amos, David Brenner, Gary Favors, Christine Fisher, Renee Hevia, Kareem Moffett, and Kathy Young.[1][2]

The Cincinnati Public Schools Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Board member terms began on the first day of January following the election.[3] All members represent the district at-large. Four four-year terms were up for election on November 7, 2017.

Candidates had to be 18 years or older as of November 7, 2017, residents of the district for which they ran, and registered voters in that district.[3] Candidates had to file for this election with the Hamilton County Board of Elections by August 9, 2017.

There were two campaign finance deadlines for Ohio school board candidates in 2017:[5]

  • The Pre-General was due on October 26, 2017.
  • The Post-General was due on December 15, 2017.

All school board candidates whose names appear on the ballot are required to file pre- and post-election reports. A pre-election report is due 12 days before the election if candidates spend or receive $1,000 or more in monetary or in-kind contributions between the time they last filed a report and 20 days before the election. Post-election reports must be filed within 38 days after the election. School board candidates are required to file a semiannual report by the last business day in July if they do not file a post-primary report and they receive $10,000 or more during the semiannual reporting period.[6]

Cincinnati Public Schools is located in southwestern Ohio in Hamilton County. The county seat is Cincinnati. The county was home to an estimated 809,099 residents from 2010 to 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the third-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 32,444 students.[8]

Demographics

Hamilton County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Ohio in terms of higher education achievement from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 35.0 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.1 percent of state residents. The median household income in Hamilton County was $49,013, while it was $49,429 for Ohio. The county poverty rate was 16.6 percent, compared to the state's 14.6 percent.[7]
