Cindy Menz-Erb is the former District 3 representative on the Richmond Public Schools school board in Virginia. First appointed to the board in March 2017, Menz-Erb lost a re-election campaign in the by-district special election on November 7, 2017.[1]

One of the nine seats on the Richmond Public Schools school board in Virginia was up for special election to a three-year term on November 7, 2017. Kenya Gibson defeated appointed incumbent Cindy Menz-Erb and candidates Dorian Daniels, Joann Henry, and Kevin Starlings.[2][3] The special election was called due to a vacancy to the District 3 seat on the board.[4][5][6] Lathaniel Kirts initially filed to run in the election as well, but he withdrew from the race.[7]

“ MY PRIORITIES
  • Ensure equity and equal opportunity. Education is one of the last true equalizers in America, but too many kids in Richmond are being left behind. Our education system is deeply segregated, which hurts all involved. A Federal investigation into RPS’s disciplinary practices, and the recent comprehensive review from the State Department of Education has revealed some uncomfortable truths. If that weren’t enough, the Trump-DeVos era of school vouchers and privatization represent a shameful dismantling of the principles of public education in our country.
  • Move forward the facilities improvement and redistricting plan. RPS has a plan to update its school buildings to provide safe learning environments and more equitable distribution across schools. I will collaborate with City Council and the Mayor’s Office to fund this plan and ensure a path forward.
  • Attract and retain talented teachers. We can all think of stories of our favorite teachers that had tremendous impact on our lives. We have caring and talented teachers in RPS and we want them to stay. We must make sure their wages reflect how important their work is to our community and ensure they have a safe and supportive work environment.
  • Support families. Many of our kids and families are experiencing trauma and poverty at high rates. We must provide more comprehensive support for families so that kids come to school ready to learn. I will work to ensure that resources are available to train and support teachers, administrators and all school personnel in researched backed trauma informed care strategies.   • Provide access to technology and the internet. Programs like the recently adopted Sprint 1Million Project will help address the technology gap. I will work to bring more programs and resources like this to ensure all RPS students have the tools for success.

  • Equity. All children, regardless of race, class, or zip code, deserve to learn in a safe, vibrant and caring environment with equal access to resources.
  • Opportunity. The economy is changing and our system of public education needs to keep up. We need to make sure our kids are getting the digital, technical, and critical thinking skills that are in demand by employers and are a pathway for many to the middle class.
  • Parental involvement. The simple truth is that schools perform better when parents are involved in their child’s learning. That is why we should have open door policies for parents in all of our schools. Also, parents should have the opportunity to engage with their child’s education outside of the school building.[12]
