Calhoun County, Alabama: Calhoun County Circuit Judge Debra Jones has qualified and announced her candidacy for the Alabama Supreme Court on the Republican ticket to fill the vacancy which is being left by the retirement of Judge Thomas Woodall. Jones took office for the first time for the circuit court in 2011 and is running after only her first year of a six-year term. Jones commented on her decision, stating, "“Campaigning is tough … believe me, I’m not excited about doing that again. But I’ve thought about it for a long time and I feel very called to do this. This is an open seat and an open opportunity." A key plank of her campaign platform will result in Jones rejecting all special interest campaign donations. She commented on this, saying, "“For years special interests have tried to influence the Supreme Court by putting millions into campaigns on the appellate level. I seek to bring balance back to the court. Justice is not for sale.” Jones will be competing in the Republican primary with Judge Tommy Bryan who serves on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.[1]
