An effort in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to recall Councilmembers Edward Aversa and Gloria Oh was initiated in July 2019. Petitions were deemed invalid after a missed deadline.[1] State statute prevented the recall from being on the ballot in 2020 because both officials were up for election in 2020.[2]

Petitioners accused Aversa and Oh of failing to do adequate due diligence on affordable housing, failing to be transparent regarding the negotiations, failing to work with other borough departments to determine the impact an influx of residents would have on the borough, and failing to demonstrate to residents that they are working in their best interest.[2]

Petitioners were required to submit valid signatures equal to 25% of the registered voters in the jurisdiction, as of the last general election. About 900 signatures were required. Signatures must be turned in by 160 days after petitions are approved for circulation. State statute prevented the recall from being on the ballot in 2020 because both officials were up for election in 2020. The effective deadline for the signature-gathering process against Aversa and Oh was August 26, 2019, which would have put the recall on the November 2019 ballot. Petitioners did not meet that deadline.[2]
