A City of Millbrae Hotel Tax, Measure J ballot question was on the November 3, 2009 ballot for voters in the City of Millbrae in San Mateo County, where it was approved.
Measure J increased the City of Millbrae’s hotel tax from 10% to 12%. Any guest who stays at a hotel or similar establishment within the city borders of Millbrae pays the tax.
Hotel taxes are general taxes. Revenues raised from hotel taxes go into the city's general fund where they can be used for any general governmental function of the city.
The city estimated that $400,000 would be generated in tax revenues by Measure J. This assumed that hotel occupancy rates in the city would stay the same.
The tax increase went into effect on January 1, 2010.

Path to the ballot
The Millbrae City Council approved the tax increase, and putting the tax increase on the ballot. By state law, a minimum of 2/3rds of the City Council had to vote in favor of the tax increase before it could go on the ballot.
