City of San Bruno Hotel Tax, Measure F (November 2009)
A City of San Bruno Hotel Tax, Measure F ballot question was on the November 3, 2009 ballot for voters in the City of San Bruno in San Mateo County, where it was approved.
Measure F increased the City of San Bruno’s hotel tax from 10% to 12%. Any guest who stays at a hotel or similar establishment within the city borders of San Bruno pays the tax.
The last time the San Bruno hotel tax was increased was in 1991, when the City Council raised it from 8% to 10%. In 2001, voters were asked to affirm the 10% rate because it wasn't clear that the City Council had previously had the authority to unilaterally increase the tax.
Hotel taxes are general taxes. Revenues raised from hotel taxes go into the city's general fund where they can be used for any general governmental function of the city.
In 2008-2009, the City of San Bruno took in $1,225,000 from the existing hotel tax. It was anticipated that Measure F would generate an additional $270,000 in revenue a year, assuming that hotel occupancy rates in the city stayed the same.
