City of Sunnyvale Elected Mayor, Measure A (November 2011)
A City of Sunnyvale Elected Mayor, Measure A ballot proposition was on the November 8, 2011 ballot for voters in the City of Sunnyvale in Santa Clara County, where it was defeated.
If Measure A had been approved, voters in the city would have henceforward directly elected their mayor for up to two four-year terms. Currently, the Sunnyvale City Council appoints its mayor to a two-year mayoral term. Measure A would not have affected the powers of the mayor. It would have meant that the city council would no longer be in a position to remove a mayor with a vote of 5 of the council's 7 members.[1]

The question on the ballot:
| Measure A: Shall Charter Sections 600, 601, 602, and 605 be amended to change the current Council-appointed Mayor to a directly-elected Mayor for a 4-year term, to provide an 8-year lifetime term limit for a directly-elected Mayor, and to provide that service as Mayor is not counted toward Council term limits and a person can serve a combined total of 16 years as Mayor and Council member in a twenty-year period?[2] |
