Ballotpedia survey responses

School Boards-Survey Graphic-no drop shadow.png

Wilson participated in Ballotpedia's 2015 survey of school board candidates. The following sections display her responses to the survey questions. When asked what her top priority would be if elected, the candidate made the following statement:

Top priority is to support the Superintendent in the district's first ever strategic planning process which will provide a clear direction and areas of focus for the next few years in order to change outcomes for all students served by Federal Way School District regardless of race, ethnicity, income, zip code or language. It is important and urgent that the board maintain stability and consistency to support this process - with a 129% turnover rate in Board Members since 2000, this is a critical issue..[3]
—Claire Wilson (2015)[4]
Ranking the issues

The candidate was asked to rank the following issues by importance in the school district, with one being the most important and seven being the least important. This table displays this candidate's rankings from most to least important:

Positions on the issues

The candidate was asked to answer 10 questions from Ballotpedia regarding significant issues in education and the school district. The questions are in the left column and the candidate's responses are in the right column of the following table:

Question Response
What is your stance on implementing Common Core standards?
They should be implemented.
Should your district approve the creation of new charter schools?
No
Should the state give money to private schools through a voucher system?
No
Are standardized tests an accurate metric of student achievement?
No
How can the district ensure equal opportunities for high and low achieving students?
Use of race equity tool in program and budgetary decisions to assure student populations who are disproportionately impacted by factors such as race, poverty, ethnicity and language receive the supports services and dollars needed to change the trajectory of outcomes for all students. Regardless of whether a student is high or low achieving, there should always be a next step in their growth and an opportunity to be challenged in their learning on the continuum that would be.
How should expulsion be used in the district?
Expulsion cases must be viewed on a case-by-case basis rather than the district having an overarching policy.
If a school is failing in your district, what steps should the school board take to help the students in that school?
The Superintendent is accountable for the monitoring of individual schools and then reporting to the School Board as outcomes/ends of the district, are reported on throughout the year (through data, surveys, etc.). The job of the School Board is to support the Superintendent in that role which may mean supporting leadership changes, supporting additional resources to meet the enhanced needs of the building, etc. It is not the boards job to 'fix' the failing school by stepping into the day to day operations of the district or taking on the role of the educational leader, the Superintendent.
Do you support merit pay for teachers?
No
How should the district handle underperforming teachers?
Coaching and mentoring programs need to be put in place to assure that the professional learning of the teacher is matched with job and classroom embedded supports. Strategies should be implemented to support the teacher with measure of programs and performance indicators outlined to assure progress is being made to increase classroom performance of teacher and engagment and outcomes of individual children.
How would you work to improve community-school board relations?
Listening sessions, open opportunities to meet with a broad set of community based and youth serving organizations and asking for their involvement, strategic planning sessions to include community and student voice in shaping the direction of the district for the next 5-8 years, ongoing involvement in local organizations and agencies involved in providing services and supports to the children and families that are served by Federal Way Public Schools (OneAmerica, Educational Equity Coalition, etc.)

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Washington

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states. To contribute to the list of Washington scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
