Clarence Cooper is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. He assumed senior status on February 9, 2009.[1]
Early life and education
Cooper graduated from Clark College with his bachelor's degree in 1964 and later graduated from Emory University School of Law with his J.D. degree in 1967. He later graduated from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government with his Masters in Public Affairs in 1978. From 1968 to 1970, Clark served in the U.S. Army.
Professional career
Cooper began his legal career in the Atlanta Legal Aid Society in 1967 before becoming assistant district attorney for Fulton County in 1968 and from 1970 to 1975. Cooper began his judicial career as a municipal court judge for the City of Atlanta Municipal Court from 1975 to 1980. He than became a superior court judge in the Fulton County Superior Court from 1980 to 1990. In 1990, Cooper became a state appeals judge in the Georgia Court of Appeals from 1990 to 1994.[1]

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Zell Miller, Cooper was nominated by President Bill Clinton on March 9, 1994 to a seat vacated by Richard Freeman. Cooper was confirmed by the Senate on May 6, 1994 on a voice vote and received commission on May 9, 1994. Cooper assumed senior status on February 9, 2009.[1]
