Campaign themes
2014
Gayles' website highlighted the following campaign themes:[2]
Growing Michigan’s economy by fighting for the middle class
- Excerpt: "We need to give our working families a hand up, not a hand out, and create educational and economic opportunities. We must reinvest in public education and promote a skilled workforce through vocational and technical training programs to attract and keep businesses. "
Reinvesting in Public Education
- Excerpt: "Investing in public education has immense social and economic benefits. I am committed to ensuring our children have access to a quality education and the opportunity to achieve."
Fixing our roads and improving our infrastructure
- Excerpt: "Although our roads and highway system are vital to our State’s infrastructure and economy, Michigan's roads are underfunded by over 1 billion dollars annually. We must fix our roads and find long term sustainable solutions for investing in our infrastructure."
A fairer tax system
- Excerpt: "Repealing the tax on senior’s pensions, reinstating the earned income tax credit and child tax credit, and expanding the homestead property tax are top priorities of mine. When the middle class has more money, we are able to purchase more consumer goods, invest in higher education, strengthen our communities, and rely less on public assistance to make ends meet."
Standing up for working families
- Excerpt: "I will defend Detroit pensioners and vehemently advocate for protecting the right to collectively bargain. I also support raising the minimum wage so one who works 40 hours a week in this state has to raise their family in poverty."
