Claude Appel is the chief judge of the Colorado 3rd Judicial District. He was appointed to this position in March of 1986.[1]

Education

Appel received his B.A. degree from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) in 1974 and his law degree from the University of Colorado in 1978.[1]

Career

Appel worked as a private practice lawyer and as a Deputy District Attorney for the 3rd Judicial District prior to his judicial appointment. From January of 1985 until March of 1986, he served as a county judge. He was then promoted to District Judge.[1]

Elections

2012

Appel was retained in the general election on November 6, winning 68.13 percent of the vote.[2]

Judicial performance evaluation

The Third Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance announced its recommendations for judges up for retention in 2012. According to its website, the commission evaluates judges based on the following criteria: integrity, legal knowledge, communication skills, judicial temperament, and administrative performance.[3]


Judge Appel was recommended for retention by an unanimous vote. [4]
