Claudia Burton was a judge on the 3rd Judicial District in Marion County, Oregon. She was first appointed to the bench in 2003 by Governor Ted Kulongoski and was re-elected to the position in 2010 and 2016.[1] She retired from the bench on December 31, 2020.[2]

Burton earned her B.A. in political science from Princeton University and received her J.D. from the University of California at Berkley Law School. She was admitted to the Oregon Bar in 1989.[3][4]

Prior to being appointed as a full-time judge to the 3rd Judicial District in 2003, Burton served as a pro tem judge for the 3rd Judicial District. Burton worked as an administrative law judge for the Construction Contractors Board and for the Workers Compensation Division of the Department of Consumer and Business Services from 1996 to 2000. Burton began her legal career prior to that in private practice.[4]

Judges of the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Circuit Courts are all selected in an identical manner. They are chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[5]

The chief judges of the circuit courts are appointed by the chief justice of the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[5]

Qualifications
To serve on the circuit court, a judge must be:[5]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a state resident for at least three years;
  • a resident of his or her circuit for at least one year;
  • a state bar member; and
  • under the age of 75.

Burton was re-elected to the 3rd Judicial District in 2010 after running unopposed. She received 99.10 percent of the vote.[6]
