August 9, 2011
Hannibal, Missouri: On July 18, 2011, Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Robert M. Clayton, III, an attorney from Hannibal and former legislator, to fill a vacancy on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District. He will replace Judge Nannette Baker, who now serves as a federal magistrate, and will be required to run for retention in the next general election on November 6, 2012. He stated, "I feel humbled and flattered and honored. I thank the governor with all my heart." The Governor noted in a press release, "Robert Clayton’s many years of experience as a public servant and in practicing law will serve him and the people of Missouri well on the appellate bench."
Clayton spent eight years, from 1995 through 2002, serving in the Missouri House of Representatives (District 10). He was then named to the Missouri Public Service Commission in 2003, where he has served as the chairman since 2009. In addition, he is a longtime private practice attorney in Hannibal.[1][2]
