Two seats on the Clear Creek Board of Trustees were up for general election on May 10, 2014. Incumbent Win Weber won re-election against Nick Long in the District 2 race. Board president Ken Baliker won another term in the District 3 seat without opposition.
About the district
Clear Creek Independent School District is located in League City, Texas, a city located in portions of Galveston County and Harris County. According to the United States Census Bureau, League City was home to 88,188 residents in 2014.[1] Clear Creek Independent School District was the 28th-largest school district in Texas, serving 39,209 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]
Demographics
League City outperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2010. The United States Census Bureau found that 42.1 percent of League City residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.3 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in League City was $88,289 compared to $51,563 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in League City was 4.7 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Clear Creek Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to three-year terms. Five members are elected to specific districts and two members are elected to at-large seats. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014. Three seats were on the ballot in May 2015 and two seats were up for election in May 2016.
Candidates for the Board of Trustees submitted paperwork with the school district secretary by February 28, 2014. Each candidate must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least six months. Members filed two campaign finance reports with the district clerk prior to the election unless they did not receive or spend $500 during the campaign.[4]

Endorsements
Nick Long received endorsements from Mayor Tim Paulissen and County Commissioners Ken Clark, Ryan Dennard and Kevin O'Brien. He also earned the endorsements of League City Councilors Heidi Theiss, Todd Kinsey, Geri Bentley and Dan Becker.[5]

What was at stake?
Issues in the district
Debate over teacher tenure
Members of the Corpus Christi chapter of the American Federation of Teachers demonstrated outside of the district's administration building on April 28, 2014 to protest district policy on teacher tenure. Board members Carol Scott, Jane Bell, John Longoria and Dwayne Hargis rejected a measure to reinstate continuing contracts during an April 21, 2014 meeting. These contracts were eliminated from the district in 2011 due to concerns over lengthy legal processes involved in removing ineffective teachers.[6]
