Two of the seven seats on the Clear Creek Independent School District school board were up for by-district general election on May 6, 2017. Newcomer Chris Reed filed for the open District 2 seat. Due to lack of opposition, the District 2 election was canceled, and Reed was automatically elected. In District 3, incumbent Ken Baliker lost to Arturo Sanchez.[1][2]

Voter and candidate information
The Clear Creek school board consists of seven members elected to three-year terms. Five members are elected by district and two members are elected at large. Members are not paid but receive compensation for travel expenses and conference fees associated with district business.[3]
To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file for office by February 17, 2017. In order to run for a school board in Texas, candidates had to be U.S. citizens, 18 years old by their first day in office, and have resided in the state for 12 months and the district in which they ran for six months.[4]
In order to vote in this election, Texas residents had to register to vote by April 6, 2017. To vote in Texas, one must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of the county in which one registers, and at least 18 years old.[5][6][7]

$487 million bond set for May ballot
Voters in the Clear Creek Independent School District decided whether to approve a $487 million bond in the May 6, 2017, school board election. If the bond had been approved, the funds would have been used for new schools and classrooms, repairs for already-existing schools, safety improvements, student programs, and technology. The proposed bond would have resulted in a $0.035 tax rate increase.[8][11]
About the district
Clear Creek Independent School District is located in League City, Texas, a city located in portions of Galveston County and Harris County. League City was home to 98,312 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau. The district was the 28th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 40,812 students.[12][13]
Demographics
League City outperformed in comparison to Texas as a whole in terms of higher education attainment between 2011 and 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 43.0 percent of city residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 27.6 percent for the state as a whole. The median household income in the city was $93,675, compared to $53,207 for the state. City residents lived below the poverty level at a rate of 5.6 percent, while that rate was 15.9 percent for all state residents.[13]
