COLUMBIA, Missouri: Boone County Circuit Judge Christine Carpenter received a strange request earlier this week, when the defense asked to bring live alligators into the courtroom. Ken Henderson, who is charged with 17 counts of animal abuse, asked his attorney Kevin O’Brien to make the request. Henderson wants to show the jury that the gators are domesticated and that he takes care of them.[1][2]

“We would like to show the jury that these are not normal alligators. He cares for them just like a dog owner cares for their pet. … They even sit on his lap.”[2] - Attorney Kevin O’Brien

The prosecution was opposed to the idea, saying that it “literally turns the case into a circus."

"I don't see how it will be relevant to show the jury how the animals conduct themselves presently. This case is about the events and circumstances of a year ago."[2] - Prosecutor Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Haigh

Henderson was charged after animal control officers searched his van at the Boone County Fairgrounds, finding seven alligators. He will stand trial this July.[1]

Henderson is a former guest of cable network Animal Planet.
