Three of the nine seats on the Clifton Public Schools Board of Education were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. Incumbents Gary Passenti and Rosemary Pino, along with Fahim Abedrabbo, won election to the three seats by defeating Bimal Brahmbhatt, Frank Kasper, Allison Proszowski, Matthew Trella, and incumbent Michael Evans.[1]

The Clifton Board of Education consists of nine nonpartisan members who are elected at large to three-year terms. Elections are staggered, with three seats up for election each year. The general election was held on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]

Candidates for the school board must be 18 years old and registered to vote. They must have resided within the district for at least one year prior to their election or appointment. Candidates cannot concurrently hold office as mayor or as a member of the governing body of Clifton. Board members cannot have been convicted of a felony. There are no term limits.[2]

Clifton Public Schools is located in Passaic County in northern New Jersey. The county seat is Paterson. Passaic County was home to 510,916 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the 14th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 10,853 students.[8]

Demographics

Passaic County underperformed compared to New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education achievement between 2010 and 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.2 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income in Passaic County was $59,513, compared to $72,062 for the entire state. The poverty rate in the county was 18.2 percent, compared to 10.8 percent statewide.[7]
