Closings result from North Carolina budget cuts
August 9, 2011
North Carolina: While no courts are expected to close as a result of the state's budget crisis, departments associated with the judiciary are closing facilities. North Carolina Legal Aid, which receives funds from the state, has announced it will close three offices by the end of next month. Those are located in Smithfield, Boone and Henderson. Thirty positions will also be cut.[1]
Yesterday the Department of Corrections announced the closing of four prisons. Those facilities will close from October 1 to December 1, and will cut 203 positions. For now, prisoners are scheduled to move to other prisons in the state.[2]
Shuttering the doors of the prisons will save the state an estimated $10.7 million, while Legal Aid is coping with a $2 million budget cut. The judicial branch has been ordered to trim $19 million from its budget.[3]
