Clyde H. Hamilton was a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush (R). He assumed senior status on November 30, 1999.[1] His service ended on September 2, 2020, when he died.[2]

Prior to joining the Fourth Circuit, he served as a judge on the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.

Education

Hamilton earned his B.A. from Wofford College in 1956 and his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1961.[1]

Military service

Hamilton served as a captain in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958.[1]

Hamilton was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit by President George H.W. Bush on June 12, 1991, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089. The American Bar Association rated Hamilton Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[3] Hearings on his nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on July 11, 1991, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on July 18, 1991. He was confirmed by unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on July 18, 1991, and he received his commission on July 22, 1991. He assumed senior status on the court on November 30, 1999, and served until his death on September 2, 2020.[1][4][2]

District of South Carolina

Hamilton was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina by President Ronald Reagan on November 13, 1981, to a seat vacated by Judge Robert Chapman. Hamilton was confirmed by the Senate on November 24, 1981, and he received his commission on December 1, 1981. He resigned from the district court on July 31, 1991, upon his elevation to the Fourth Circuit. Hamilton was succeeded in this position by Judge William Traxler.[1]
