Background
The Coalition for Civil Liberties was known as the Coalition for Civil Liberties - No on 63, A Project of California Rifle & Pistol Association. Previously, the group went under the names Coalition for Civil Liberties, A Project of California Rifle & Pistol Association and California Rifle and Pistol Association Firearms Freedom Committee.[2] The Coalition for Civil Liberties No on 63 was renamed to oppose California's Background Checks for Ammunition Purchases and Large-Capacity Ammunition Magazine Ban proposition, which proposed to place limits on ammunition sales and bans large-capacity ammunition magazines.[1] The committee has been sponsored by the California Rifle and Pistol Association, a 501(c)(4) that sought "to defend the civil and constitutional rights of individuals to choose to responsibly own and use firearms" through political advocacy.[3]
According to the paperwork filed with the state of California in 2016, the group had three listed principles, Richard Minnich, Joel Friedman, and Tiffany Cheuvront.[4] Friedman is the former chairman of the National Rifle Association's Pasadena chapter.[5] As of 2016, Cheuvront was the operations director for the California Rifle and Pistol Association.[6]

California Proposition 63, Background Checks for Ammunition Purchases and Large-Capacity Ammunition Magazine Ban (2016)
In 2016, the Coalition for Civil Liberties opposed California's Background Checks for Ammunition Purchases and Large-Capacity Ammunition Magazine Ban proposition, which proposed to place limits on ammunition sales and bans large-capacity ammunition magazines. The measure appeared on the ballot on November 8, 2016.[1] The committee argued that the passing of prop 63 would permit the confiscation of ammunition magazines, it would put ammunition vendors out of business, it would make it illegal to share ammo, and it would increase fees and wait times associated with the purchase of ammo.[8]
