Chock completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2020. Click here to read the survey answers.

Chock was a nonpartisan candidate for District 51 of the Hawaii House of Representatives in 2018. To advance to the general election, Hawaii election law requires nonpartisan candidates in partisan races to receive at least 10% of the votes cast for the office or to receive a vote total equal to or greater than the lowest vote total of a winning partisan candidate. Chock did not meet that threshold.[1][2]

Biography

Coby Chock was born in Kailua, Hawaii. He obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2020.[3]

As a third-generation Kailua resident, I have grown up in this community, and have seen the changes in Kailua Town and Waimanalo from a different perspective. I have seen the heavy-handed development of Kailua and played sports on Azevedo field back when it was still usable. I have seen when Kailua was a town, and I have seen when Waimanalo was taken care of. Since these times, Kailua has started to become a city, infrastructure in Waimanalo has been neglected, and homelessness has become rampant.

I am running for the State House of Representatives to end chronic homelessness in our state, to increase our renewable energy capacity, to look out for our kamaaina and working-class families, and to make living in Hawaii an option for future generations of young people.

  • I will work towards ensuring we have affordable housing and opportunities for our younger generations so that living in Hawaii is an option. I will do this by continuing to develop affordable housing and also finding innovative ways to prevent foreign investors from buying investment properties that could otherwise house local families.
  • I will ensure that we are on 100% renewable energy by 2045 by working with other legislators to get the annual budget we need to keep this goal on track. We need to be creative and diversify the types of renewable energy we are implementing and at the same time, work with our communities toward accomplishing this goal with the utmost respect for the people it will be affecting.
  • Homelessness is a multifaceted issue and as such we need to take a multifaceted approach to fix the issue. We need an all-encompassing plan to support nonprofits while also developing stronger mental health institutions and drug rehabilitation centers. We also need to ensure we support our social workers and hire more social workers to facilitate this process and get more of our homeless community in housing. Permanent solutions are always the goal which is why it is also necessary to ensure that we continue to build more affordable housing and create more local jobs so we can get people back on their feet.
With all the confusion and uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, our elected officials will be responsible for getting everyone's daily lives back on track. As district representative, I will actively listen to the needs of my community and ensure that our working-class families quickly recover and thrive following this Coronavirus outbreak. I will ensure people can afford to eat and keep roofs over their heads and I will put measures into place to strengthen our local economy, bolster our communities, and power through these long-standing issues.
