Garrett filed to run as an Democratic candidate in the 2016 election for the Texas Railroad Commission.[1] He came in second in the primary election and, according to Texas law, proceeded to a runoff election as no candidate received a majority of the vote in the first primary. He was defeated in the runoff primary election by Grady Yarbrough.
