I am Cody Swearingen, a lifelong resident of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and a proud 6th-generation Oklahoman. My family's deep roots in education, healthcare, law enforcement, and military service have instilled in me a profound respect for community service and civic duty. I graduated with a bachelors degree from Oklahoma State University, where I was actively involved in student government, representing my peers and advocating for policies that improved student life and education standards.

Professionally, I am working on completing my Master's degree in Information Technology, which has further honed my skills in problem-solving and innovative thinking. This education allows me to appreciate and address the increasingly complex challenges that face our modern society.

My decision to run for office is driven by a commitment to serve my community and state with the same dedication that my ancestors demonstrated. I am running to bring a fresh, informed perspective to our government, ensuring that our policies reflect the values and needs of the people of District 17.
  • I am committed to fostering an environment that promotes economic prosperity for all. My platform emphasizes tax reform, support for small businesses, and strategic investments in our local economy to create jobs and drive growth. My approach ensures that our community not only thrives today but is also well-prepared for future challenges.
  • My campaign is built on the principle of transparency and accountability. I pledge to ensure that our government reflects the true values and needs of the people in District 17. Unlike career politicians, my focus is on effecting positive change and ensuring that our policies promote the well-being and prosperity of our community, while maintaining limited government.
  • Reflecting on our nation’s history, from the young Founding Fathers to today’s technology innovators, it’s clear that youthful energy brings transformative ideas. As a young candidate, I am committed to infusing our government with new perspectives and solutions that embrace both our proud traditions and our potential for innovation. This blend of youth-driven dynamism and respect for foundational principles is essential for crafting policies that are both effective today and sustainable tomorrow.
I am passionate about driving economic growth and ensuring prosperity for all. My focus is on creating policies that support small businesses, encourage entrepreneurship, and attract high-quality jobs to our community. By reducing regulatory burdens and promoting innovation, I aim to build a thriving economy where opportunity is abundant and accessible to everyone.

Simultaneously, I champion the principle of limited government. I believe in reducing unnecessary government interference and enhancing efficiency and accountability within governmental operations. My goal is to ensure that government serves effectively as a facilitator of economic and community development, respecting individual freedoms with minimal bureaucratic obstacles.
The most important characteristics for an elected official include integrity, transparency, accountability, and a deep commitment to public service. Integrity ensures that officials act ethically and honorably, upholding the trust placed in them by the public. Transparency is crucial for maintaining open and honest communication with constituents, allowing for informed dialogue and participation. Accountability involves taking responsibility for one’s actions and decisions, being responsive to the needs of the community, and being willing to correct mistakes. Lastly, a genuine commitment to public service motivates officials to prioritize the common good over personal or partisan interests, ensuring that decision-making is always aligned with the best interests of the community they serve. These characteristics are foundational for building trust, ensuring effective governance, and fostering the long-term well-being of the community.
I believe my dedication to public service, ability to listen and respond to community needs, and a strong commitment to transparency and ethics are qualities that would make me a successful officeholder.
If I could be any fictional character, I would choose to be Jonas from The Giver by Lois Lowry. In his society, Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memories. This role provides him access to the full range of human emotions and experiences that were eradicated for "sameness."

What resonates most with me is Jonas's response to these revelations: he becomes a challenger of the status quo. As he uncovers the truth, his courage to confront and question the accepted norms of his society grows. Jonas's journey is one about the power of awakening and the critical need for change. This mirrors my aspiration to run for office. Jonas’s story inspires me to strive for a community where we are not just content with how things have always been but are always moving towards how things could be better.
Yes, having previous experience in government or politics can be beneficial for state legislators as it provides them with a practical understanding of the legislative process, familiarity with policy-making, and insights into the complexities of government operations. However, it is not strictly necessary. Fresh perspectives from individuals outside the traditional political sphere can bring innovative solutions and challenge the status quo. Ultimately, a blend of experienced and new legislators can enrich the legislative process, combining depth of knowledge with new ideas and energy to address the issues facing their constituents.
I firmly believe that financial transparency and government accountability are cornerstones of effective governance. Transparency ensures that all governmental financial dealings are open to public scrutiny, enhancing trust and facilitating informed citizen participation in the process. I support proactive disclosure of financial data, stringent internal controls, and robust auditing processes to prevent mismanagement and corruption. Engaging with the community to gather feedback and implementing modern technologies to make information accessible are also critical. Upholding these principles is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring that government actions align with the best interests of the people.
