Colt Gill is a former Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction. He was appointed to the nonpartisan position on October 11, 2017, by Gov. Kate Brown (D), following the resignation of Salam Noor.[1] Gill was confirmed by the Oregon State Senate on February 12, 2018.[2]

Gill stepped down as the Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction on June 25, 2023. [3]

Biography

Gill's career in education began in 1988 when he was hired to teach fourth and fifth grade at Creslane Elementary School. In 1995, Gill was promoted to the position of technology coordinator for the Creswell School District. Gill held that post until 1999 when he was hired as the principal of Harrison Elementary School in the South Lane School District. In 2002, the district promoted Gill to the position of director of curriculum and instruction. Gill was named assistant superintendent in 2004. In 2006, Gill left the South Lane School District to join the Bethel School District as its superintendent. Gill was named by Gov. Kate Brown (D) as the state's first education innovation officer in 2016, where he was responsible for increasing graduation rates across the state.[4]

Gill was appointed to serve as the acting Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction on October 11, 2017, by Gov. Kate Brown (D).[1] Brown named him as her choice to be the permanent Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction on January 12, 2018, and he was confirmed by the Oregon State Senate on February 12, 2018.[2][5] Gill stepped down on June 25, 2023. [6]
