Five seats on the Community Consolidated School District 15 school board were up for at-large general election on April 4, 2017. Four seats were up for regular election and came with a four-year term. One seat was up for a special election and had a two-year term. Incumbents Peggy Babcock, Gerald Chapman, and James Ekeberg ran for re-election against challengers Lisa Beth Szczupaj, Anthony Wang, Michael Smolka, Adam Bauske, Asad "Sid" Aman, and Frank Annerino. Barbara Kain and David Border ran in the special election for the seat with the two-year term.[1] Annerino, Kain, Smolka, Szczupaj, and Wang ran together as the Engage D15 slate.[2] All five members of the slate won election to the board.[3]

Voter and candidate information
The Community Consolidated School District 15 Board of Education consists of seven members elected at large to four-year terms on a staggered basis every odd-numbered year. A general election was held on April 4, 2017. There were five seats up for election.[4]
To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file a notarized statement of candidacy and notarized nominating petitions with the Cook County Clerk's Office during the filing period. The filing period began December 12, 2016, and ended December 19, 2016. Candidates could also file an optional loyalty oath at that time. A statement of economic interests also had to be filed by December 19, 2016. The nominating petitions had to include the signatures of 50 voters residing in the school district and could not be circulated until September 20, 2016.[5]

Endorsements
The Daily Herald endorsed incumbent Gerald Chapman and challengers Asad "Sid" Aman, Adam Bauske, and Michael Smolka for the four-year term seats and David Border for the two-year term seat.[8] The organization 4RD15Kids endorsed Smolka and the other members of the Engage D15 slate: Barbara Kain, Lisa Beth Szczupaj, Anthony Wang, and Frank Annerino.[9]
The organization Progress for D15 and D211 and the local teachers' union endorsed Chapman, Bauske, and Border as well as incumbents Peggy Babcock and James Ekeberg.[10][11]
The Journal and Topics Newspapers endorsed incumbents Babcock and Chapman and challengers Szczupaj and Annerino for the four-year term seats and Kain for the two-year term seat.[12]

Campaign finance
School board candidates in Illinois were required to file campaign finance reports if they did one or both of the following:[13]

The first campaign finance deadline was February 27, 2017, and the second campaign finance deadline was April 3, 2017.[14]

About the district
Community Consolidated School District 15 is located in Cook County in northeastern Illinois. The county seat is Chicago. Cook County was home to 5,238,216 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[16] The district was the 19th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 12,745 students.[17]
Demographics
Cook County outperformed the rest of Illinois in terms of higher education achievement in the years 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 35.8 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 32.3 percent of all state residents. The median household income for Cook County was $55,251, while it was $57,574 for the entire state. The poverty rate was 16.2 percent, compared to 13.6 percent statewide.[16]
