Alabama: Alabama Circuit Court Judge R. Joel Laird, Jr of Calhoun County Circuit Court had a complaint filed against him through the Alabama Ethics Commission on March 25. Anniston City Councilman Ben Little filed the complaint claiming that Laird did not pay certain taxes he owes and committed various other misdemeanors while on the bench. Little requested that Judge Laird either be removed from office or receive a public reprimand, saying this, "But convicted or not, I believe Judge Laird has committed crimes while sitting on the bench passing judgment on others."

The outcome of the affair remains uncertain, however, because the two-year statute of limitations had expired on filing criminal charges for the alleged finance and ethics reports crimes.[1]
